Pierre Recognized as a 2015 Playful City USA Community

Pierre, S.D.–For the fourth year in a row, Pierre has been named a Playful City USA by KaBOOM! and the Humana Foundation.

Pierre, one of only three South Dakota communities to be named a 2015 Playful City USA, received this designation for its efforts to make the community more playable. Playability is the extent to which a city makes it easy for all kids to get balanced and active play.

“The outdoors are very much a part of the fabric of our community,” said Pierre Mayor Laurie Gill. “As a city government, we are constantly looking to create additional outdoor play opportunities for our community members and visitors to enjoy.”

Helping Pierre receive the 2015 Playful City USA designation is the Fourth Street Play Trail which has been recognized as a best practice for “play along the way” by KaBOOM! and was recently named a national demonstration site for the Game Time Corporation.

“The national recognition from both KaBOOM! and Game Time is evidence of how progressive Pierre is being with our parks and play systems,” said Mayor Gill. “These honors are a testament to the great work our Parks and Rec Board, staff and partners are doing.”

Pierre has 97 acres of parks and more than 50 miles of multi-use trails. Additional City park and rec amenities include tennis courts, an 18-hole disc golf course, horseshoe pits, a beach volleyball court and baseball and soccer fields.

“Playability is crucial to the success of our future communities, and we are proud of the work these cities and leaders are doing to provide a better quality of life for all residents, and especially families,” says KaBOOM! President, James Siegal. “Play provides a competitive advantage for cities looking to attract and retain residents. With these esteemed leaders, and our friends and partners across the country, we continue to prioritize play for all kids.”

Pierre was also named a 2014 Playful City USA. As a result of that designation, Pierre received grant dollars to enhance LaBarge Park with the recently installed fire-truck themed playground equipment.
